Overthinking / A practical guide
What to do when you overthink at night
An unfinished task can become a whole imagined future when you are lying in the dark.
You remember an email, then tomorrow’s conversation, then everything that might go wrong. This guide offers a way to organize your response to those thoughts; it is not a treatment for sleep problems.
Find the actual unfinished item
Separate “I need to reply to that email” from “I am letting everyone down.” The first may need a plan. The second may be a branch that takes you farther from a useful action.
A RAR example
Recognize: “One unfinished task has turned into a string of imagined problems.”
Acknowledge: “The email does need a reply. I can write a brief note to handle it tomorrow.”
Redirect: Record the task and when you will address it. Then gently return attention to resting, the feeling of the bedding, or an ordinary quiet image.
Do not turn redirection into another test
You do not have to make every thought disappear. If it returns, you can acknowledge that you have a plan and redirect again without grading your performance.
If disrupted sleep keeps happening, or worry is affecting your daily life, discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional.
